Synthrally
Multiplayer Arcade Sports Action

For the past year, while applying for jobs, I’ve been working on a multiplayer fighting game tentatively called Synthrally! (link to website here) I’ve been itching to make a fighting game for a while, and there are a lot of things I’m taking inspiration from in this project; but the most important thing about this project to me is that it’s low-scope with a high potential for additions and polish. The above is footage from the (current) beta build of the project, which is pretty close to completion. We’re also going to PAX East 2018 through PAX Uprising! Below is footage and screencaps from the game (descending chronologically).

I learned a ridiculous amount from doing this project! During the course of the development, I had to:

  • learn how to model, UV unwrap, and texture models
  • learn how to write custom shaders in Unity’s shader language / node-based shader tools
  • override Unity’s default physics system and create my own rudimentary one
  • learn how to rig and animate rudimentary bones to get convincing “controller stick” movement
  • organize, design / print merch, and run a convention booth for PAX East 2018

…and a great deal of other things. I’ve gained a ridiculous amount of perspective from this project; now I can actually speak to my graphics, physics, music, and 3d artist friends in their language! It’s been an incredibly difficult and illuminating process. The things I’ve learned from this project will massively upgrade the quality of all games I make in the future. Learning is *damn* fun.       I’ll be pushing it to completion over the next few months, but if you have any feedback or ideas for it, I’d love to hear them! Email me at izzyabdussabur@gmail.com, or on twitter (@bbqsteaktips).
